Advanced Cyber Security Career Studies Certificate
Central Virginia Community College
Hardworking, detail-oriented information systems professional with a strong foundation in cybersecurity. I earned the Advanced Cyber Security certificate at Central Virginia Community College with a 3.9 GPA. My coursework covered how networks and systems are built, secured and supported: TCP/IP and subnetting, routing and switching, firewalls and intrusion detection, encryption and authentication, incident response and digital forensics, and the laws that govern computer crime and data privacy. I design relational databases and write SQL, and I program in Java, Python, JavaScript, PHP and HTML/CSS. I want to help an organization keep its systems reliable, its data secure and its users productive.

What I studied at Central Virginia Community College, course by course.
The foundations of network security: objectives, architecture, models and layers, plus risk management, security policy and the five keys of security (confidentiality, integrity, availability, accountability, auditability).
Attack and defense methods for networks, studied from the hacker's point of view: attacks, intrusion detection, malicious code, computer crime and industrial espionage.
Civil and common law as it applies to network security: statutes, jurisdiction and constitutional issues in computer crime and privacy, plus how digital evidence is seized, handled and presented in court.
An in-depth look at communication protocols, centered on TCP/IP, examined from an attacker's perspective to expose protocol weaknesses, along with the authentication and encryption used to defend them.
Firewall, web and e-commerce security: firewall concepts, types and topologies, how they relate to TCP/IP, web server security, and digital certificates.
Networking media, physical and logical topologies, standards and protocols, with an emphasis on TCP/IP and IP addressing, and on implementing and supporting LANs and WANs.
Principles and practices of software development: problem solving and programming logic in structured and object-oriented design, independent of any one language.
Designing, building and managing websites by hand-coding HTML and CSS.
An introduction to relational database theory, and to administering and querying databases with commercial database systems.
The fundamentals of object-oriented programming in Java, with an emphasis on building, debugging and documenting console and GUI applications.
Skills for succeeding in college: study strategies, time management and academic planning.
Applied math for technical careers: arithmetic, unit conversion, algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
Digital and information literacy, core computer concepts (hardware, software, operating systems, cloud, databases, security) and hands-on work with productivity applications.
Technical communication: organizing and writing clear reports, business correspondence and research-based writing, plus oral presentation practice.

A self-hosted site built from scratch on Apache, PHP 8 and MariaDB with plain JavaScript. It uses prepared statements, CSRF tokens, a Content Security Policy, rate limiting and a database user that has only the permissions it needs.
Defended and investigated vulnerable virtual machines in hands-on cyber range exercises: finding misconfigurations, analyzing traffic and hardening systems.
Researched historical zero-day vulnerabilities and wrote analyses that explain how each exploit worked and how it was mitigated, written for non-technical readers.
